5 Top Tourist Attractions in Toronto

Sometimes referred to as “New York City run by the Swiss,” Toronto offers a ton of things to see and do, including world-class dining with a diverse range of international cuisine, great shopping, cultural attractions and more.

1. Head to the Top of CN Tower

The 1,815-foot-tall CN Tower held the title of world’s tallest completed tower for more than 34 years, until Canton Tower took the honors in 2010. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy a panoramic vista of the city and a perspective of its layout before exploring. A 58-second ride will bring you to the top and if you’re especially adventurous you can even take the EdgeWalk, walking around the outside ledge of the tower, hands-free.

2. Royal Ontario Museum

A must for history enthusiasts, the Royal Ontario Museum is Canada’s largest institution dedicated to natural history and world cultures with some six million artifacts covering everything from the First Nations people to dinosaur bones and Chinese temple art. It has a great interactive hands-on gallery for younger kids with three interactive, themed areas filled with touchable specimens and artifacts. They can get a close-up look at fossils and meteorites, try on costumes and even dig for dinosaur bones.

3. Toronto Islands

The Toronto Islands are made up of three major islands: Centre, Ward’s and Algonquin. All linked by bridges, boardwalks, and paths, they can be reached via a short ferry ride across the Inner Harbour. There are English gardens, beaches, picnic areas and an amusement park with thrill rides and a petting zoo among other attractions.

4. Toronto Zoo

The largest zoo in the country, the Toronto Zoo spans more than 710 acres and features animals from every continent, including around 450 different species. There are six miles of walking paths winding through various regions like the Tundra Trek, the Americas, Canadian Domain, Eurasia, Australasia and Africa. The Gorilla Rainforest and the Giant Panda Experience are especially popular.

5. St. Lawrence Market

The St. Lawrence Market is a top attraction among both tourists and locals. In operation since 1803, it’s the biggest in the city and was even named the best market of its kind in the world by National Geographic. Located in the heart of downtown, it hosts over 120 specialty food vendors, so be sure to bring your appetite. You’ll find everything from the usual fresh produce, baked goods and organic foods to seafood, meats and prepared items.
