The Correct Order to Apply Your Skincare Products

In order for skin care products to work more efficiently, you need to apply them in correct order. But how?

The Correct Order to Apply Your Skincare Products

The correct order to apply your skincare products:

  1. Makeup Remover
  2. Cleanser
  3. Exfoliator
  4. Mask
  5. Toner
  6. Essence or Serum
  7. Eye Cream or Eye Serums
  8. Moisturizer
  9. Sleeping Mask
  • Makeup Remover

Removing your makeup every night is a skin care necessity, as you will be removing the sebum your skin produced during the day, SPF and makeup.

  • Cleanser

Once your makeup is removed, it’s time to cleanse your skin. This must be done in the morning too. In the evenings, this step will also ensure that your skin is completely cleansed.

If you’d like a deeper cleanse, look at Foreo Luna. Its silicone bristles emit sonic pulsations and it’s completely waterproof.

Which cleansing product is best for you depends on your skin type, lifestyle and personal preference.

  • Exfoliator

Once your skin is cleaned, you can exfoliate it to remove dead skin cells from the outer layer. It makes skin soft and smooth; and active substances that will be applied after can penetrate into the deepest layers of the skin.

Exfoliation can be mechanical or chemical. Chemical scrubs include products like salicylic acid, lactic acid, glycolic acid or citric acid. Physical scrubs use salts, apricot peel, almond and tiny beads of microplastics.

However, do not exfoliate your skin too often, unless indicated on the packaging that it is suitable for daily use. It is usually recommended to exfoliate the skin twice a week, but it depends on the type of skin, as well as on your age.

  • Mask

After exfoliating your skin, you can use a mask. Masks contain concentrated amounts of vitamins and nutrients that treat and deliver incredible results to your skin. Masks are usually used once or twice a week.

  • Toner

Toner is a good idea as a final cleansing step, to restore your skin’s pH and prep it for treatment products.

  • Essence or Serum

Essence is a super concentrated and moisturizing formula that specifically target wrinkles, fine lines, etc. If the product contains a higher concentration of active ingredients, it is called an ampoule or booster.

I use one product in daily skin care (essence or serum or booster), but there are people who would like to apply all this. What do you need to know? First one needs to apply water texture then gel-like texture and then cream texture.

  • Eye Cream or Eye Serums

The skin under your eyes is the thinnest on your face, so your eye-specific products need to go on before any heavier moisturizers.

  • Moisturizer

Often, the last step in skin care is applying a cream. Day creams often contain SPF to protect skin from UV rays. Of course, night creams do not contain SPF, but they are very nutritious and moisturizing, because your skin dries out during sleep. In addition, night creams often contain retinol, because this ingredient works better in the evening.

If you are under 20 years old, a simple cream is great for protecting and moisturizing skin. As you get older, it’s wise to adjust your cream to your age. The older the skin, the less it contains elastin and collagen, and the more active substances are needed to fill this deficiency.

  • Sleeping Mask

A sleeping mask contains the same moisturizing ingredients as a night cream, but difference is concentration. Thus, a sleeping mask gives your skin additional hydration. Sleeping masks are usually used as a REPLACEMENT for your night cream on a twice or thrice a week. If you have very dry skin it is worth a try.

Conclusion

I hope you find it interesting to read and understand why the order of your skin care routine is so important. With each step, you prepare for the next step so that your skin gets the most benefit. If you have any questions, please let me know!

Wow! I don’t always wear makeup, but when I do I always remove it. I usually just wash my face and then moisturize. I need to use my eye cream. Not getting any younger! I had no idea there were so many steps! No wonder I look a mess!

Great post! I love skincare and completely agree with the order of your steps! I’ve never used an essence before and I’m not really sure what the benefits are? Do you have one that you really like? The advice I follow when it comes to the order in which you should apply your skincare is thinnest products first ending with the thickest.

It’s a great advice, thank you! Essences are more lightweight and less concentrated than serums and serve as an additional layer of hydration. I don’t have a favorite essence at the moment, but I’m actively looking.
