9 Steps to Take If You Want to Start Working Out for the First Time

Have you decided to start working out for the first time? Do you want to lose weight or maybe decided to lead a healthy lifestyle? Despite this, the thought of going to the gym after work instead of drink with friends can deter you from realizing this goal. I will help you.

9 Steps to Take If You Want to Start Working Out for the First Time

If you’re ready to start, but a little nervous. Here are 9 simple steps for doing just that.

1. Talk to your doctor

Check with your doctor to see if there are any types of workouts that you need to avoid. This is especially important if you suffer from any chronic illnesses. And that’s a good first step on your path to physical fitness.

2. Body Fat, Muscle and Bone Testing

You need to get a basic measurement of fat, muscle and bones; it will let you see where you are now and track changes over time. It will also help track weight loss progress.

DEXA scan

All this you can be done using DEXA Scan.

A DEXA Scan is a quick procedure (about 7 minutes) that involves lying flat on the scanning bed so an area of your body can be scanned.

DEXA Scan gives you the precise information about you body fat, muscle, and bone composition. As well as using a DEXA Scan for basic body fat measurement, athletes use the scan to pick up muscle asymmetries between their left and right sides.

DEXA scan

Results you get:

  • Overall body fat, lean tissue (muscle), bone weight and percentages
  • Breakdowns for both legs, arms and your torso
  • DEXA scan image showing where your body fat and muscle is distributed
  • Visceral fat (the dangerous fat around organs)

As someone who likes to exercise, it’s important to me that I’m able to track the results.

3. Training shoes, sports bra and workout outfit

Finding a pair of comfortable shoes is one of your first steps. The best way to find the right pair is to try on a few in sports store. You should also find a supportive sports bra and a few tops and pants or shorts.

I like to buy bright sportswear that makes me feel better.

4. Buy basic equipment

If you’re not ready to jump into a gym, start at-home workouts. Choose multipurpose products that are time-tested and affordable. With just a couple of dumbbells and a jump rope, you can get an awesome workout.

5. Take Selfies

Throw on a sports bra and shorts, then take a photos to capture your body from all angles. Do this every four weeks to track your progress. You might also want use a tape measure and track measurements.

I  still keep all my photos, it’s nice to keep a reminder where you started.

6. Start Small

The first week you intend to exercise, start small. Setting a realistic goal is key to success. Start slowly and build up gradually. As your stamina improves, gradually increase the amount of time you exercise.

7. Have a Plan

Having a plan is essential when you’re just starting out. Some people love early morning workouts. Others like to train in the evening. Some people are motivated by group classes, while others prefer to workout at-home to work at their own pace. Plan your workouts in advance, it will be an extra motivation for you.

8. Join a gym

If you are ready to start working out at a gym, choose one that’s close to your home — this makes it more likely that you’ll be train there. Take a tour of the facilities you’re interested in and consider the factors that are important to you.

9. Workout classes for beginners

Pull the instructor aside and tell them you’re new. Don’t be afraid to take breaks when you need them. Listen to your body. Be flexible. If you’re not feeling good, give yourself permission to take a day off.

Now you’re ready for action. Do not forget: Small steps are what lead to sustainable change. Treat the fitness and health commitments you make for yourself like you would your job and family.

Do you prefer to work in a gym or at-home? Let me know in the comments.

This is great tips for starters. I’m a gym girl. I would not do it on my own @ home. It just wouldn’t happen. Too many distractions. Plus the thing that helps me the most are the people I have met at the gym. They motivate me and we kind of hold each other accountable.
