Beauty Tips – Combination Skin

I decided to write a new blog series called: Beauty Tips – Care for different skin types. I  would like to share tips with you; hear your opinion and advice. You can read Beauty Tips – Oily Skin HERE. You can read Beauty Tips – Dry Skin HERE. You can read Beauty Tips – Sensitive Skin HERE.

There are five basic skin types: Normal, Oily, Combination, Sensitive and Dry. Your type is determined by how much or little of the sebum your skin produces. It affects you genetics, seasonal changes, medications, hormonal changes, stress and even sun tanning. It may change several times a year.

Beauty Tips - Combination Skin

Test: There is a quick test that will help you easily determine what skin type you have.

Cleanse your face before bedtime and AFTER cleansing, do not use any skin care products and go to bed. When you wake up in the morning, blot your face with paper towels.

If you have combination skin, paper towels will show oils spots from your nose and forehead area (T-zone) but not your cheeks.  Combination skin has areas of dry (or normal) and oily skin. T-zone is usually oily.

I also have combination skin.

Skincare routine
  • Cleansing of combination skin should be gentle, yet effective as it is necessary not to over dry your skin and remove excess oil. It is better to use a gentle gel cleanser specially designed for combination skin.
  • Exfoliate once a week with scrub or non-abrasive products – Alpha Hydroxy Acid (glycolic acid, lactic acid, malic acid, citric acid, tartaric acid) or Beta Hydroxy Acid (salicylic acid).
  • If you do not want to buy a mask made specifically for combination skin, use masks that you already have. Purifying mask on the T-zone and moisturising mask on dry areas.
  • Use a gentle tonic that will help to keep your dry skin moisturized and prevent acne breakouts in the T-zone. If you have excessively dry areas and a very oily T-zone then you should use two tonic – for oily skin and for dry skin.
  • If you have very dry skin in some areas and oily skin in others, then an antioxidant serum paired with moisturising lotion will work great. The right serum will help your skin find balance. In addition, it will prevent premature skin aging.
  • For combination skin, use a water-based moisturizing lotion containing tea tree oil, zinc or glycolic acid to address the oiliness. And ceramides, colloidal oatmeal, hyaluronic acid or apricot kernel oil to address dryness.
  • Always use with a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30.
